Rat Birth Control FAQ

How does rat birth control work?

Every kit from In Harmony contains a tank of liquid fertility control bait. Rodents who consume the liquid become reversibly infertile. It’s a lot like human birth control pills because the effect can be reversed over time if they stop consuming it. The active ingredients are VCD, an inorganic compound, and triptolide, a product extracted from the thunder god vine (Tripterygium wilfordii).

Does rat birth control harm birds of prey and other wildlife?

No. Traditional rat poison moves up the food chain and has been found in all types of predators, sometimes with deadly consequences. Rat birth control is broken down in the rodent’s liver so it doesn’t hurt the predators who eat the rodents.

Is there proof that rat birth control works?

Yes. You should expect to see a reduction of over 90% in the first year. Several scientific studies have shown liquid VCD and triptolide bait to cause reversible infertility in rats. Both field and lab studies report impressive results.

When will I see results?

The fertility control effect isn’t instant. Studies have shown that it takes about 70 days for the rodents to become infertile.

Can I use it around kids and pets?

Yes but be sure to follow all instructions when choosing a place for your dispenser. The tank should never be left out in the open – only stored in the tamper resistant dispenser. Wear nitrile gloves when replacing the tanks since the liquid can cause a mild skin irritation. Rat birth control is also thought to cause transient infertility in small mammals if ingested in large enough quantities. Please read the label that comes with your birth control tank for more information.

Why is rat birth control so expensive?

The cost is high because the ingredients are expensive. Pharmaceutical grade triptolide costs over $1,000 per gram – far more expensive than pure gold!
